Vaeries are commonly accredited by the main of society ((both preternatural and mortal)) to be a hybrid species, though in reality they are more akin to an anomalous mutation. The vaerie was created accidentally through a blending of bloods, a faerie with most commonly an elf, though pairings with other, older deities have produced the same basic result. They are 5th in a ranking of the oldest beings//creatures in existence, behind only gods/desses, little gods ((maia, angels, etc.)), faeries and elves. As such, they are often referred to as a sibling species to the core quartet of immortals.

The two oldest and most powerful vaeries emerged in unison and in ignorance of the other when only the core group of immortals had existed in the world. Both vaerie courts, upon discovering the existence of the other, have argued over who indeed was the first true vaerie. Without any credible way to discover the truth, their families and subjects have engaged in a silent, unsteady stalemate with neither party acknowledging the other, neither party completely forgetting a war could be a flutter away....
